Charlottesville, VA. On Wednesday, October 14, 2009 THE NORTH FACE – Never Stop Exploring – Speakers Series brought Kit DesLauriers, a world class mountaineer and extreme skier to share her LESSONS FROM SUMMIT – Skiing the 7 Summits.

Approximately 200 people filled the University of Virginia, Newcomb Hall Theatre to be inspired by Kit’s adventures on the seven continents. Therapeutic Adventures, Inc. a local non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable education organization was the beneficiary of the event. Mark Andrews, Founder/Executive Director states, “We would like to express our Heartfelt Thanks to The North Face, Blue Ridge Mountain Sports, UVA Outdoor Recreation, and, most important, Kit DesLauriers for bringing this wonderful event to Charlottesville. It is an honor to have been selected as the beneficiary of the proceeds raised from this TNF Speakers Series event.”

For almost three decades TA has been an innovative leader designing and providing adaptive outdoor programs, special camps, therapeutic retreats, and other specialty services serving persons of all ages with differing abilities – disabilities, chronic medical impairments, and other special health needs.
According to Andrews, “Our primary goal is to improve the quality of life of ALL persons by helping them achieve independence in the outdoor environments where adaptive adventure activities are offered and enjoyed. We have served more than 3,000 clients providing more than 5,000 adaptive instructional sessions and lessons for youth, teens, adults, Wounded Warriors & Disabled Veterans. All of our participants receive partial to full scholarships through our Passport to Adaptive Outdoor Adventures program.”
LESSONS FROM SUMMIT – Skiing the 7 Summits celebrates the extraordinary unprecedented accomplishments of two-time women’s world free skiing champion, Kit DesLauriers, an exceptional female athlete who first climbed and then skied down from the summits of highest mountains on all seven continents.

Andrews states, “In some ways, the difficult, life changing challenges that Kit had to confront throughout her adventures can be compared to those that women diagnosed with cancer must face. As this is National Breast Cancer Awareness month, it is only fitting that the proceeds raised this evening will go to support the 4th annual Spring Fly Fling – Fly Fishing Retreat serving women cancer survivors. Therapeutic Adventures and Thomas Jefferson Trout Unlimited provide a weekend of rustic elegance (fly fishing, hiking, kayaking, massage, yoga, music and well deserved respite at NO Cost, that’s right — FREE for ALL the women who attend.”
