Josh Sundquist – Member 2006 US Paralympics Ski Team

Bringing these publications back as a series. This is the first of three entries.  Enjoy!

Josh was introduced to 3-Track skiing and received his first instruction with Massanutten Adaptive Snow Sports.  Early on, it was apparent that he had bigger dreams. Josh loved competition and actively sought out opportunities to confront bigger challenges.  Over the past several years, Josh demonstrated significant commitment, hard work, and focus to become a member of the 2006 US Paralympics Ski Team which recently competed in Torino, Italy.  It has been a joy to hear about and follow him on the difficult quest to accomplish his goal of making the team and competing for the United States.  Josh, you have touched our lives in such a positive way—we have all been blessed to a part of your journey.

Congratulations!

~ Mark

“Tiny Tracker” – 3 ½ year old Bi-skier brings skiing joy to family.

On February 20-22, 3 ½ y/o Jonathon Tower walked a few steps, to the extent that he could, down the wooden ramp that leads to the slopes at Massanutten. As Jonathon was diagnosed with Autism, achievement of developmental milestones don’t happen at the same time as they do for others his age.  Some would suggest that 3 ½ is too young to begin skiing.  After interviewing, Joel and Heather, Jonathon’s parents, it was clear to me that we had an ideal teaching partnership – one that  would provide the necessary parental support and the necessary instructor independence to offer effective teaching progressions on the slopes.  We had lines of communication to talk when we were not together and we had the joyous enthusiasm that comes when dad and mom can ski together with their child and celebrate the progress that is happening with each trip down the slopes.   Read more »

The much anticipated long chairlift ride to access the Black Diamond slopes provides time to ponder many questions. At the summit, the panoramic view is both breathtaking and helps to give perspective to the upcoming challenge.  Skiing well on a Black Diamond slope is a major accomplishment that takes practice, courage and commitment.
